Knowing when to fight and when not to fight
“One step at a time. One punch at a time. One round at a time.”
Rocky Balboa – Creed, 2015
Something I’ve learned. Learn to let things go.
The fight is simply the argument, the difference of opinion, clash of cultures or values. It’s the willingness to stand up for the things you believe in. The reasons you signed up and come to work every day.
Sometimes you don’t need to surrender. Just learn to switch your focus to something else. This is the designers equivalent to walking away or the ability to move between being a disrupter and unifier.
Most things worth fighting for are worth waiting to fight for, so pick your time and wait for the right opportunity. In the end it’ better to be yourself than to compromise how you work and how you treat other people.
The only fights worth having are the fights worth winning. That’s pragmatism. Knowing when to invest your time and energy in something else.
So is it worth winning the argument?
